Like the life-giving waters of the ancient Kunawai Springs, Good Shepherd Preschool seeks to share the love of Jesus Christ with the community by providing a safe, family oriented, developmentally appropriate environment that fosters the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional development of each child.

Ancient Hawaiians considered Kunawai Springs a healing center . In the 1900’s the pond became a swimming hole. In 1947 the city announced plans to convert Kunawai into a park. The park was completed in the mid-1960’s and is located directly behind the preschool.

Aloha!

We know that life is hectic and people are increasingly more disconnected from each other. Ours is becoming another generation of desperate and lonely people.

At Good Shepherd Church, we are a family of Bible-believing Christians and we care for one another. We are singles and couples, we are young and old. And we're glad we're connected. Good Shepherd Church is a place where we feel wanted...and not just when we're feeling great, but even when we're down. Especially when we're feeling down.

We're down-to-earth people just like you - learning to live in a tough, challenging world. Sometimes we're knocked down, sometimes we're bruised too, but we're always being picked up and cleaned off by our friend Jesus, who shows us how to win the battles of life. Good Shepherd Church is a "fun place to get serious about God" and we would love it if you would join us.Good Shepherd Church is affiliated with Mauka-Makai Ministries

Max Fowler - Meet our Staff

Aloha! Hi, my name is Max Fowler and I am the Community Life Pastor here in Lilha at Good Shepherd Church. I was born and raised here in Hawaii and graduated from Kaiser High School. I went on to the University of Hawaii, earning my B.S. in 2001 and in 2006, graduated from Hawaii Theological Seminary, with a M.A. in Religion. My wife, Vanessa, is my best friend, partner in ministry and the love of my life. We have two daughters, Maile (3) and Skye (1), who are true gifts from God. Our family likes to spend time playing at the beach in the sand and waves, visiting with family and friends and at the shaved ice store in our neighborhood!

Our ministry here at Good Shepherd Church in Liliha is fresh, exciting and dynamic! The Community Life Pastor helps to lead the church outside of its four walls, meeting the people of the community where they are at, blessing them with the love and forgiveness found in Jesus Christ. We are building friendships with the people of the Liliha community, ministering in fun and creative ways like: Free Movies, Music Concerts, Game Nights, Family Fun Nights, Christmas and Easter Events, Bible Study Groups, Anti-Drug Rallies, Crime and Safety Meetings, Neighborhood Security Watch Patrol, and Community Clean-Ups.

A special relationship with our local elementary school has also been developed. Good Shepherd Church has been able to partner with Lanakila Elementary School to improve student achievement, which leads to a bright future for all of our community's keiki. We've collaborated in certain areas like: The Save America's Youth (S.A.Y. Yes!) Tutoring Program, Summer Reading Program for Kindergarteners, Daily After-School Program, School Community Council, Common Grace Mentoring Program and School Beautification Projects.

It is our goal as Good Shepherd Church to see holistic community transformation, in our churches, schools, businesses, homes and lives. We long to see how God will continue to bless and transform the people of Liliha with the power of His love!

If you have any questions about Good Shepherd Church or anything regarding Community Life, please don't hesitate to email or call me.

God bless you,

What's "Ho'ola?" - Small Groups

Ho'ola is a Hawaiian term that means to save, to nurture, to bring wholeness, to give life, and to revive. The term ho'ola accurately describes the ministry of Jesus who came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10. We are under construction, a work in progress as the Lord restores us to the wholeness He originally intended (for more, go to The Christian Faith and Our Core Values). The Lord works out this construction process within a loving, transparent community of people who love and serve one another. That's what a ho'ola group is all about, people growing and being built up through the grace of God and the love of the group so that each is equipped to love God and serve others by bringing God's grace and wholeness to them. You don't have to worry about not having it all together, since none of us have it all together. . . . yet. On this side of heaven, we are a work in progress, but when the Lord takes us home to Him, we will be made complete.

Ho'ola groups meet regularly and include singles, couples, seniors, and families. There is a Ho'ola group just right for you!

HUI GROUPS - Small Groups

Anyone associated with Good Shepherd Church may start a small group that engages people both inside and outside of church. These groups typically gather around a common interest and are sort of a "club" or "Hui".

Some typical Huis would include sports teams, book clubs, service teams, sewing groups, etc.

Christian fellowship is so much more than a Sunday service!

At Good Shepherd Church we encourage everyone to be part of a small group. It is in these gatherings that real spiritual growth takes place as we encourage one another to live in the grace of Jesus.

We believe that we all need to be connected to each other beyond Sunday, where only brief "hi's" and "bye's" can be exchanged. In additions to Sunday morning, we get together during the week in homes as "Ho'ola Groups" so that we can fellowship with each other and apply the Bible to real-life issues. Ho'ola groups meet all over the island from Waianae to Hawaii Kai, from Kailua to Town; and include singles, couples, seniors, and families. There is a Ho'ola group just right for you!

Here at Good Shepherd Church we offer several opportunities for children to learn just how much Jesus loves them. Every Sunday the following children's ministries are available.

Children's Church Ages 4-9

At Children's church your kids sing songs, learn Bible stories, do crafts, play games and have lots of fun learning about the love of Jesus in many different ways.

Since we are a family church, we all worship together starting at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday. Grandparents, parents, aunties, uncles and children of all ages worship God together for the first part of each worship service through the prayers, songs and special presentations.

Right before the sermon, the kids all come forward for a blessing or a children's sermon and then are dismissed to Kid's Klub. Kid's Klub is where your children will learn life applicable lessons on how to live a Christian life through entertaining videos and group discussion.

For ministries to children ages 10 and older, see our Youth section

Aloha,

In the summer of 1993 the Lord called my wife Nancy and I along with our two boys Daniel & Timothy to what has turned out to be a grand adventure. We left secure roots and a successful construction business in California, moving to a place many only dream of coming. Hawaii has indeed become our home and God continues to amaze us with His grace.

As Outreach Minister& Administrator at Good Shepherd Church, I have had the priviledge of watching the Lord work graciously through His people to extend the Kingdom of God on Oahu. We have been blessed to be part of this dynamic, Christ centered, people-oriented ministry. Now having planted daughter churches on Oahu and established Mauka-Makai Ministries, the adventure continues as we follow Jesus into the next chapters of spreading the Great News of God's love for us in Christ.

Please feel free to call me anytime at 523-2927 x21.

God's very best to you!

Scott

Jeff & Lynda Mueller - Meet our Staff

Aloha! Welcome to

Good Shepherd Church!

My name is Jeff Mueller and I have the joy and privilege of serving my Lord Jesus Christ as the senior pastor of this wonderful Christian ohana called Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. I was officially welcomed as Good Shepherd’s new pastor on April 6th, 2003. I am having so much fun experiencing the vast cultural diversity of Hawaii and absolutely love the beauty of the island and its people. I have grown to love “island living” and can’t imagine ever wanting to move away from the most beautiful place on earth.

Allow me to share a little more about my family and myself. I have been married to the most beautiful wahine on Oahu for 28 years now. Lynda tans very quickly so even locals here think that I am married to a local. I tease her that she is my island “leilani” (heavenly flower). Lynda has been my ministry partner for over twenty years and now she continues to serve our Lord as Good Shepherd’s church secretary. It is marvelous seeing her all day here in the offices, sharing daily in the life-changing vision of what God has called this church to fulfill. If you ever call our church office @ 808-523-2927, that is her friendly voice on the other line!

We have two wonderful children who are now grown and married to Christian spouses whom we love as our own children. Mike is now 28 and married to Renee. They live right here on Oahu and volunteer in various ministries at Good Shepherd Church. Nikki is 26 and married to Greg. They have blessed us with our first grandchild, a perfect little boy named Kaiden, now 2 years old. I never dreamed being a grandpa would be this wonderful. The only challenge for us is that they currently live in North Carolina as Greg serves in the Air Force. We miss them so much (especially Kaiden) but since we know they are all doing great and we communicate regularly via email and phone calls, it is manageable being so far away.

I received my BA in Religious Studies at Concordia College – Ann Arbor, MI. in 1989 and my Master of Divinity at Concordia Seminary – St. Louis, MO. in 1993. I received a call as a church planter to the town of Windsor, in the heart of the California wine country. My family spent ten wonderful years there serving Vineyard of Faith Lutheran Church & Ministry (www.vof.org). In the early part of 2003, God called me to serve here at Good Shepherd.

I praise our Lord for His love and grace in our lives here on Oahu. We have met so many loving people in our church’s neighborhood of Liliha, and all around Honolulu. We are both very excited about the life-changing ministry God has called us to be a part of along with all our faith-filled partners who make up the Good Shepherd ohana.

I extend to you a warm and loving invitation to join us in this most beautiful life of sharing Jesus and His love with each other and with our island. God loves you and so do we! Come see for yourself. We would love to have you visit us on any Sunday morning as we celebrate the love, grace and joy of Jesus.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have. I will respond as soon as possible. Please return to our web site regularly as we will be making many changes and sharing a whole lot of great life-changing stuff in the months ahead. And remember above all else – Jesus loves you and has a plan for your life!

In His aloha,

Pastor Jeff

Frequently Asked Questions - F.A.Q.'s

1. Will you teach my child religion?

Good Shepherd is a Christian preschool, owned and operated by the members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Our teachers are Christians and many are members of our church. We teach about Jesus and the Bible each day. While the daily "Jesus Time" may last 15 minutes, we want you to know that because we are Christians, we want God's love to shine through our lives every minute of every day, and we look for opportunities to teach about our loving Lord Jesus all day long.

2. How will you discipline my child?

It is vital for the well-being and successful development of young children that they be given clear, consistent, and appropriate limits on behavior. To help children achieve this, at Good Shepherd Preschool we teach our children the following:

1. Be kind to others

2. Be safe

3. Respect the physical environment

In "disciplining" a child, our primary goal is to support the child in developing an awareness of the necessity of the set behavioral limits and establishing an effective "inner discipline" or self-control.

3. Do you teach "academics?"

In Hawaii, many preschools have gained reputations based on stressing "academics." We suspect that, in many cases, this has led parents to believe that the more a preschool looked like an elementary school, and the more the activities appeared to challenge children academically, the better.

We have learned that "earlier is not better," especially when children are put into demanding and stressful situations. The damage done by frustration and low self-esteem lingers much longer than the benefits of early achievement. While we are interested in providing each child with a rich educational environment within a framework of acceptance and support, we resist the pressure to push children "academically."

We have adopted a developmentally appropriate curriculum called The Creative Curriculum, which advocates a well-planned environment & schedule, age appropriate materials and activities and teacher and parent involvement. It focuses on four areas of development:

Social/emotional: develop independence, self-confidence, and self-control, follow rules and routines, make friends, and learn what it means to be part of a group.

Physical: increase large & small muscle skills.

Cognitive: acquire thinking skills to solve problems, ask questions and think logically.

Language: use words to communicate with others, understand the purpose of print, recognize letters and words and begin writing for a purpose.

Our church is a community of believers with Jesus Christ as its head. We seek to love, respect and care for one another as a demonstration of His love for us.

Our outreach is to those who have no church home. Many in our area are disillusioned with religion. They have felt the sting of legalism with its impossible demands. Some have seen hypocrisy. Others have had no religious background and therefore see Christianity as irrelevant. The missing element has been knowing Jesus personally and experiencing the transformed life only He can bring. We exist for our non-members and desire to develop lasting relationships with those who are seeking peace & truth.

Who We Are And Whose We Are . . . THE TRINITY: The Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is eternal, almighty, holy, mysterious and at the same time, He is loving and intimate with His people. SALVATION: We are saved only through our Triune God's grace, by Jesus' death and resurrection. BIBLE: The Bible is the true, indestructible, incorruptible, living Word of God and vital for faith and life. MEANS OF GRACE: God's grace is present and active among His people through His Word, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper. EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN: We are a Gospel centered people (Evangelical), who hold to the profound Scriptural truths that the Lutheran Reformation restored.

GOD . . .

. . . loves you and wants to be your friend.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3: 16; NIV)

. . . has a wonderful plan for your life.
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29: 11; NIV)

YOU . . .

. . . are separated from God by sin.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3: 23; NIV)

. . . therefore cannot know His love and plan.
"But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." (Isaiah 59: 2; NIV)

JESUS . . .

. . . is God who became man, the only bridge between Himself and you.
"Phillip said, 'Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.' Jesus answered: 'Don't you know me, Phillip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say "Show us the Father'?" (John 14; 8-9; NIV) . . . "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14: 6; NIV)

. . . took the consequences of your sins by dying in your place, and rose from the dead to give you a new life and to carry out His wonderful plan for you.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5: 8; NIV)

FAITH . . .

. . . is receiving Jesus as your personal Savior and Friend.
"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." (John 1: 12; NIV)

. . . includes sorrow over sin and turning away from a self-centered life . . .
"Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2: 38; NIV)

. . . and trusting Jesus for forgiveness and for power to live henceforth for Him alone.
"And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again." (II Corinthians 5: 15; NIV)

LETTING JESUS INTO YOUR LIFE. . .

. . . can be as simple as a prayer asking him in.
"Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins and rising from the dead to give me a new life. I gladly receive You as my Savior and Lord! Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take the management of my life. Make me the person You want me to be. Let others meet You through me. Amen."

Now, join us at Good Shepherd Church as we come together for life-giving adventures in discovery and revelation, prayer and fellowship, ministry and missions, and praise and worship of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT: Christ calls us to love God with our entire being and to love our neighbors as ourselves. THE GREAT COMMISSION: The driving passion of this congregation is Jesus command to make disciples both locally and globally. This passion decisively shapes values 2-5. EVANGELISM: Together we share the Gospel of Jesus through the witness of our words and lives. CHURCH PLANTING: We plant churches that, in turn, plant churches. TRANS-CULTURAL MISSIONS: We are commissioned to make disciples of all people groups and are committed to help plant indigenous church planting churches among unreached peoples. TWO-WINGED-CHURCH: As a church body, we experience Jesus' Presence, Power, and Purpose in our lives through celebration and ho'ola groups. CELEBRATION: Worship is God meeting with His ohana; it's joy-filled, relevant, and done in such a way that the visitor can experience His reality and understand His Word. HO'OLA GROUPS: God's people gather in small groups to care for one another, to grow in discipleship, to reach pre-Christians, to mature leaders, and to multiply. AUTHENTIC CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Since church membership is a living covenant with God and fellow believers, we are each deeply involved in the mission of the congregation. SPIRITUAL GIFTS: The Holy Spirit gifts every Christian with a gift that is used to build up the body and to facilitate the mission. The use of each Christian's gift(s) is essential to the proper functioning of the body. SANCTIFICATION: The Holy Spirit molds us into the likeness of Jesus and prepares us for His mission through various ways, including the Means of Grace (see #4 top) and the following: BIBLE STUDY: Regular study of God's Word is indispensable. PRAYER: When we pray the Holy Spirit's power is released in our ministry to one another and to the world.
